Why Do You Keep Needing an Energy Cleanse? | The Pattern Beneath What You’re Carrying
By Briana Barela
For a long time, I knew how to cleanse my energy. I became a pro at it. What I didn’t understand was why I needed to do it so often.
I would clear my energetic field, feel lighter, and finally begin to feel like myself again. Then I would spend time around certain people, have a difficult conversation, walk into a heavy environment, or find myself caught in someone else’s emotions—and there I was again. Drained. Heavy. Overstimulated. Carrying something I couldn’t always explain.
So I would cleanse my energy again.
The cleansing always worked. I could always feel the difference. But eventually, I had to admit that I was caught in a cycle. I was constantly clearing energy without fully understanding how I had absorbed so much of it in the first place.
I got really good at cleaning up what I had not yet learned to stop carrying.
That realization made me curious. Instead of only asking, How do I get this energy off me? I started asking deeper questions:
- Why did this person’s energy affect me so strongly?
- Why do I continue carrying the interaction after it’s over?
- Why do I feel responsible for emotions that do not belong to me?
- What keeps me energetically connected to certain people, situations, and patterns long after I have physically walked away?
- And perhaps most importantly: What needs to change so that I’m not repeatedly returning to the same emotional and energetic place?
That was when I realized that an energy cleanse is not the entire process. The cleansing process clears the energetic residue so you can finally see the pattern underneath it. The pattern underneath it is what keeps the cycle going.
Sometimes the pattern is a lack of boundaries, people-pleasing or hypervigilance. If you can relate to that, read my article: F**k Being an Empath.
Sometimes the emotional responsibility is inherited, or absorbed. Or the belief that caring about someone means carrying what they feel. Sometimes another person’s energy activates something unresolved within us. And sometimes we remain connected through our own attention—replaying the conversation, questioning what happened, anticipating the next interaction, or waiting for closure that may never come. If any of this resonates, read: Why Empaths Have Such a Hard Time Letting Go of People.
None of this means you caused another person’s behavior or deserved what they brought into your life. It simply means that once the immediate heaviness has been cleared, you have enough space to become curious about why it remained with you.
Cleansing creates separation, clarity, and relief. But once you are clear, you have an opportunity to ask why you were carrying that energy, what kept you connected to it, and what needs to change before the next interaction.
Because the goal is not to spend your life endlessly clearing the same energy from your field. The goal is to recognize the pattern, reclaim your power, and stop carrying what was never yours to hold.
What Changes After You Cleanse Your Energy?
Pay attention to what you can see once you feel clear.
Maybe you knew you needed to end the conversation but stayed because leaving felt rude. Maybe you said yes because you didn’t want to deal with someone’s disappointment. Maybe you spent the rest of the evening defending a decision to someone who wasn’t even there.
Those are moments where the pattern becomes something you can actually change.
End the conversation when you need to. Let your no stand without building a case for it. Allow someone to have a feeling without making it your assignment.
You may still feel guilt, discomfort, or the urge to explain yourself. That does not automatically mean you made the wrong choice. It means you are making a different one.
The next time the pattern shows up, you don’t need another revelation. You need to act on what you already know.
You Can Care Without Carrying
Someone can be upset with you, and your boundary can still be right. You can understand their pain and still decide you are unavailable for the way they express it.
Caring does not require you to keep absorbing the cost of the connection. You may still need to cleanse your energy after a difficult interaction. That does not mean you failed. The difference is what you do once you feel clear. Do you return to the same dynamic and abandon what you know? Or do you let that clarity change how you participate?
You cannot control what someone brings into an interaction. But you can decide when to leave, what to agree to, and whether to keep giving the situation your attention afterward.
Give Yourself Space to Hear What You Need
Sometimes you are carrying so much that even identifying the pattern feels overwhelming. You know something needs to change, but you need a moment to hear yourself without mentally sorting through everyone else.
If you need somewhere to begin, my article, How to Cleanse Your Energy After Being Around Other People, offers a simple reset. For a more complete, self-guided practice, I created the Personal Energy Cleansing: The UYP Method, which walks you through consciously clearing your energy from the base of your spine to the crown of your head—a complete, 7-chakra clearing system.
Give yourself that space. Then take your own needs seriously enough to do something with what becomes clear. You do not have to figure out the entire relationship or resolve every old wound before deciding that something is costing you too much. Sometimes reclaiming your power begins with one honest decision—and following through on it.
Final Thoughts: You Don’t Have to Carry This Alone

Sometimes it may just be too heavy to work through on your own. You have been carrying it for so long that you can barely remember what you feel like without it. And while you may recognize the pattern, you could use support clearing what you’re holding and finding your way back to yourself.
If this is you, my private one-on-one energy cleansing session gives you dedicated space to receive that support. During our one-hour session, I use my psychic gifts, intuition, and energy work to connect with your unique energetic field, identify where heaviness may be lingering, and help you release what is ready to go. The session is focused entirely on you—what you have been carrying, where you feel depleted, and what you are ready to leave behind.
You spend enough time making room for everyone else. This is an hour to make room for yourself. Come as you are, even if you don’t have the words for everything you’re feeling. You don’t have to have it all figured out before you receive support.
