How to Cleanse Your Energy After Being Around Other People | A Simple Reset for Empaths, Highly Sensitive People, and Anyone Carrying Too Much
By Briana Barela
For most of my life, I assumed everyone experienced the world the way I did. I thought everyone felt things deeply. I thought everyone noticed the smallest shift in someone’s mood, felt the energy change when another person entered the room, and carried the weight of certain interactions long after they were over.
I was wrong. News flash: not everyone is like me. Not even close.
It actually took me a while to process that. Because if everyone wasn’t experiencing people, emotions, and energy the way I was, then what were they experiencing? What did it feel like to walk into a room without immediately noticing everything? What was it like to have a difficult conversation and simply move on with your day?
Eventually, I stopped trying to figure it out. Because honestly, it doesn’t fucking matter.
The more important realization was that I needed to understand how I moved through the world. I needed to recognize that being deeply sensitive to people and their emotions meant I could walk away from an interaction carrying far more than what was actually mine.
Someone else could be angry, anxious, grieving, overwhelmed, or emotionally chaotic—and somehow, hours later, I would still be feeling it in my own body. The person was gone. The conversation was over. But the energy of the interaction was still with me.
For years, I didn’t know how to separate myself from it. I didn’t know how to recognize where I ended and someone else began. I just knew that I could feel completely fine before being around someone and leave feeling heavy, irritated, exhausted, anxious, or unlike myself.
That is why learning how to consciously cleanse my energy became so important.
I started becoming aware of what changed, recognizing what I may have picked up or continued carrying, and learning how to return to myself. Here is a simple reset to help you begin.
How to Cleanse Your Energy After Being Around Other People
Cleansing your energy after being around other people does not have to involve an elaborate ritual. Sometimes you simply need to create separation from the interaction, notice what changed within you, release the energy your body is still holding, and consciously bring your attention back to yourself.
The purpose of this reset is not to label another person’s energy as bad or blame them for everything you feel. It is to recognize that something shifted during the interaction. And you can give yourself permission to release it.
1. Create Physical Separation From the Interaction
Before trying to understand what you are feeling, give yourself a moment of physical space.
Step outside. Go into another room. Sit quietly in your car. Put down your phone. If you have already returned home, change your clothes or move into a part of your home that feels peaceful.
Physical separation sends a clear message to your body: the interaction is over.
This matters because sometimes we leave a person or environment physically but remain there mentally and emotionally. We replay what was said. We imagine what we should have said. We anticipate the next conversation. Our bodies may have left, but our attention is still inside the interaction.
Take a moment to notice where you are right now.
Feel your feet against the floor. Look around the room. Take a slow breath and allow yourself to recognize that you are no longer in that conversation, environment, or energetic exchange.
You are here now.
2. Ask Yourself What Changed
Before immediately deciding that someone else’s energy has attached itself to you, become curious about what you are actually experiencing.
Ask yourself:
- How did I feel before this interaction?
- How do I feel now?
- When did I notice the shift?
- Where am I feeling it in my body?
- Does this emotion feel familiar to me?
- Am I still mentally participating in something that has already ended?
Maybe your shoulders became tense. Maybe your thoughts started racing. Maybe you suddenly felt angry, anxious, exhausted, sad, or emotionally scattered. Perhaps you began replaying the conversation the moment you walked away.
You do not need to analyze every feeling or immediately determine exactly where it came from. You are simply establishing a point of awareness.
Recognizing what changed helps you separate your original emotional state from what you may have absorbed, activated, or continued carrying during the interaction.
3. Let Your Body Release the Interaction
Energy does not always leave simply because you understand where it came from. Sometimes your body needs an opportunity to consciously release what it is still holding.
Unclench your jaw. Drop your shoulders. Shake out your hands and arms. Stretch your neck. Take a walk. Exhale slowly and completely. If you feel restless, give yourself permission to move instead of forcing yourself to sit still.
You are not trying to perform the movement perfectly. You are allowing your body to stop bracing against something that is no longer happening.
As you move, breathe, or stretch, imagine the emotional weight of the interaction beginning to loosen. You do not have to force it away. Let your body recognize that it no longer needs to hold the energy in place.
4. Use Water to Mark the End of the Exchange
Water can create a physical and energetic transition between what you experienced and what you are ready to release.
If possible, take a shower and imagine the energy of the interaction washing away from your body. If you cannot take a shower, slowly wash your hands and forearms. Pay attention to the sensation of the water instead of rushing through it.
As the water moves over you, set a clear intention:
I release what is not mine to carry.
The words do not need to be complicated. Your intention is simply to acknowledge that the interaction has ended and you are no longer willing to keep holding its emotional or energetic residue. Let the water carry it away.
This is what it means to consciously clear your energy.
5. Call Your Attention Back to Yourself
Now notice how much of your attention is still focused on the other person.
Are you replaying their words? Trying to understand their behavior? Imagining another conversation? Worrying about what they think of you? Trying to solve a problem that belongs to them?
Your attention is part of your energy. When your mind remains consumed by another person, part of you is still engaged in the exchange.
Place your hands somewhere on your body that feels grounding—your chest, stomach, or thighs—and take a slow breath.
You can say:
I call my energy and attention back to me.
Then bring your awareness to something that belongs to your present life: your body, your breath, the room around you, the task in front of you, or something that genuinely restores you.
You do not have to solve the other person in order to return to yourself.
6. Choose What Happens Before the Next Interaction
Once you feel clearer, ask yourself what you need moving forward.
Do you need more time alone? A stronger boundary? Less access? A different conversation? More preparation before entering that environment again? Do you need to stop making yourself responsible for how another person feels?
An energy cleanse can help you release what you picked up, but it should also help you hear yourself more clearly.
The goal is not to become afraid of other people’s energy or isolate yourself from every uncomfortable interaction. The goal is to remain connected to yourself while moving through the world—and recognize when something no longer belongs in your energetic field.
How Do You Know If the Energy Cleanse Worked?
An energy cleanse does not always create a dramatic shift. You may not suddenly feel euphoric, completely energized, or like an entirely different person.
Sometimes the change is much quieter. Your breathing may become deeper. Your shoulders may soften. Your thoughts may slow down. The conversation may stop replaying so loudly in your mind. You may still remember what happened, but it no longer feels like you are standing in the middle of it.
You might also notice that you can hear yourself more clearly again. The emotion that felt overwhelming begins to lose its intensity, and it becomes easier to separate what you genuinely feel from what you may have picked up during the interaction.
Some signs that your energy is beginning to clear include:
- You feel more present in your body.
- Your mind is no longer consumed by the other person.
- The emotional charge of the interaction has lessened.
- You feel calmer, lighter, or more grounded.
- You can think about what happened without immediately reliving it.
- You begin to feel like yourself again.
Do not force yourself to feel better or decide that the cleanse failed because the shift was not immediate. Some interactions leave behind more than momentary emotional residue. They may activate an old wound, expose a missing boundary, or connect to something you have been carrying for much longer.
A simple reset can help you release the energy of an everyday interaction. But if the heaviness remains, or you find yourself repeatedly needing to clear the same person, relationship, or emotional pattern—it may be time for a deeper energy cleanse.
Final Thoughts: Clear Your Energy and Return to Yourself
Learning how to cleanse your energy after being around other people is ultimately about learning how to return to yourself.
You can care deeply without carrying every emotion you encounter. You can be present for someone without remaining energetically connected to the interaction long after it ends. And you can acknowledge what you feel without automatically accepting it as yours.
The more consistently you pause, notice what changed, and consciously release what you no longer need to carry, the easier it becomes to recognize your own energy underneath everything else.
When a Simple Reset Isn’t Enough
A simple reset can help after a difficult conversation, an overwhelming environment, or an emotionally heavy day. But sometimes the energy has been accumulating for much longer.
You may be carrying the residue of multiple relationships, prolonged stress, grief, emotional caretaking, or years of absorbing what was happening around you. When the heaviness feels deeply rooted—or you cannot remember the last time you genuinely felt like yourself—you may need more than a few quiet moments and a cleansing shower.
I created the Personal Energy Cleansing: The UYP Method, a step-by-step digital guide that walks you through consciously clearing your energy from the base of your spine to the crown of your head. It gives you a structured practice you can move through at your own pace and return to whenever your energy feels heavy, scattered, or unlike your own.
