Energy Cleansing Meditation: You Don’t Have to Fix Everything You Feel

By Briana Barela

Recently, I noticed something about myself that I couldn’t unsee:

Even when I stopped working, I was still working... on myself.

I could close my laptop, put down my phone, and sit somewhere quiet. But within minutes, my attention would find something that needed to be fixed, improved, researched, or accomplished. Sometimes it was a thought. Sometimes it was a feeling. Lately, it has often been my body - adjusting my shoulders, moving my hips, changing how I’m sitting, monitoring my breath.

That attention has transformed my life. But I started noticing how 'paying attention' could become another demand, another project, another thing to fix.

I would experience a moment of relief and immediately start looking for the next thing to correct. At some point, I had to ask myself: Can I feel something without immediately doing something about it? That question has been changing how I approach meditation.

For a long time, meditation was difficult for me because I couldn’t shut my mind the fuck up. My thoughts were racing, intrusive, and incredibly distracting. I would try to get quiet, but my attention kept getting pulled into another thought. Sitting still didn’t mean I could find stillness inside.

Now, I can sit in meditation and actually find quiet. Silence. I can listen to my breath. I can feel it moving through my body and notice where it goes. I can stay with that experience instead of being pulled away from it constantly.

That difference is significant to me. For years, I wanted enough quiet to hear myself. Now that I can hear myself, I’m learning to listen without immediately turning what I hear into something I need to fix. I can let my breath move through me. I can feel what’s there. And I can give myself a moment to simply exist.

When Getting Quiet Becomes Another Assignment

You finally give yourself a moment to sit down, and suddenly you’re evaluating the whole experience. Am I breathing deeply enough? Should my shoulders be more relaxed? Why am I still thinking about that conversation? You came here wanting some peace, but now you’re monitoring yourself like there’s a right way to feel and you need to figure it out.

I recognize this because I’ve been doing it in more places than meditation. Recently, I felt energized and powerful, and my immediate instinct was to find somewhere to put it. Write something. Work on UYP. Get something done while I had the capacity. When I considered simply enjoying how I felt, a part of me thought I would be wasting it. That caught my attention. Why did having energy automatically mean I owed someone—or myself—more work?

I’m learning that I can sit with that feeling, too. I can feel inspired without acting on every idea immediately. I can have energy left at the end of the day without finding another task to consume it. During meditation, that means noticing the urge to adjust, analyze, or accomplish something and giving myself a little time before following it. Sometimes I need to move or get more comfortable, and I do. But sometimes I’m already comfortable, and my mind is looking for a job because that’s what it’s always done. That constant search for something to work on is no longer serving me the way it once did, but I’m grateful for how long it helped me keep going. Now, I’m practicing letting myself just be, without needing to make that moment useful.

What Energy Cleansing Meditation Means in My Practice

In my practice, an energy cleansing meditation gives me space to notice where my attention has been and what I’m still carrying. Sometimes a conversation is over, but I’m still participating in it in my head. Sometimes I’ve spent so much time thinking about what someone else needs, feels, or expects that I haven’t asked myself how I’m doing. Sitting down gives me space to recognize that. If you’re unfamiliar with energy cleansing, my article What Is an Energy Cleanse? explains the foundation.

That choice is important to me. I don’t want to approach every uncomfortable feeling as something that needs to disappear. Sometimes sadness deserves room. Sometimes anger brings my attention to a boundary I’ve ignored. Sometimes I need rest, and I’ve been too busy pushing myself to acknowledge it. During an energy cleansing meditation, I give myself time to listen. I can recognize what needs my care, where my attention has become tangled in someone else’s experience, and what I’m ready to stop carrying.

Ground Yourself Wherever You Are

The first thing I do is find somewhere quiet where I can be uninterrupted and comfortable. Sometimes that means putting my ass in the grass. Sometimes I lie down and get horizontal, or sit in a comfortable meditation position. What matters to me is having enough support that I can settle into the experience without spending the whole time holding myself up or adjusting my position.

Grounding is part of how I connect with Mother Earth. I imagine that connection extending beneath me, giving me somewhere to settle my attention and feel supported. You don’t have to physically touch the ground to do this. You could live on the thirtieth floor and still ground yourself. The connection I’m describing is spiritual, and you can bring that intention into the space you already have.

Begin by noticing what is supporting you—the chair, the couch, the floor beneath your feet. Give yourself a moment to arrive before deciding what needs to happen next. You don’t need to force a particular breath or hold a position that feels uncomfortable. You want to feel present enough to listen to yourself, and that begins with allowing yourself to be comfortable.

Observe Your Thoughts Without Following Every One

When I notice my attention wandering now, I return to something I can actually experience in the moment. Often, that is my breath. A thought may still be there, but I can give my attention somewhere else to rest without finishing the entire story that thought started.

Sometimes something important comes up, and I decide to return to it afterward. I don’t have to dismiss it or solve it while I’m sitting there. This was an incredible realization for me: recognizing that I can acknowledge something and still choose when to engage with it. Even the urge to get up and do something can be observed for a moment before I follow it.

How I Bring Visualization Into My Practice

From there, I connect with God, Source, the Universe, the Creator—whatever language feels right to you. In my mind’s eye, I envision white light coming from beyond the edge of the universe and moving into my energetic field. I experience that image as a connection with something expansive and supportive, a place to direct my attention while I consciously make room to release what I’ve been carrying.

Sometimes visualization feels vivid; other times, it is more of an intention or a sense of connection. I don’t need to force myself to see a perfect image or manufacture a sensation to stay present with the practice. From there, my deeper clearing process moves through each chakra with its own focus, visualization, and spoken intentions, followed by a closing ritual.

Just Because You Can Feel It Doesn’t Mean You Have to Carry It

I can hear someone’s anger without making it my identity. I can recognize their disappointment without immediately rearranging myself to resolve it. I can love someone and still have a boundary around how I allow them to treat me. Those choices can be difficult when you’re accustomed to paying close attention to everyone else’s emotions.

Meditation gives me an opportunity to notice where that attention is still going. The interaction may be over, but am I still defending myself in my head? Am I searching for an explanation that will finally make them understand? Am I waiting for their approval before allowing myself to feel settled? Sometimes I discover that I’ve continued giving a situation my attention long after I wanted to leave it behind.

I also want to be honest about what belongs to me. My sadness, anger, or discomfort may deserve care. I don’t want to dismiss my own experience by deciding every difficult feeling came from someone else. I can take time to understand what I’m feeling while questioning whether I’ve also taken responsibility for something that was never mine to manage.

Give Yourself Time Before Doing Anything Else

When I finish meditating, I try to give myself a little room before jumping back into everything. Sometimes I recognize a need I’ve been overlooking. Other times, I simply appreciate having spent a few quiet moments with myself. I don’t need every meditation to produce a profound realization.

When something does become clear, I can decide how to respond. Maybe I need to end my workday, have an honest conversation, or follow through on a boundary I’ve already identified. Maybe I need time before making a decision. I’m learning to take my needs seriously without immediately turning every realization into another project—and to enjoy the parts of my life that already feel good.

Follow the Complete Practice With The UYP Method

If you recognize how much you’ve been carrying but don’t know where to begin releasing it, I created the Personal Energy Cleansing: The UYP Method to guide you through that process. This 14-page guide brings the work I’m describing here into a complete written ritual—from preparing your body and space, working with your breath, and setting your intention to moving through all seven chakras, root to crown.

Final Thoughts

I’m learning how to stay in the quiet I once struggled to find. What’s becoming clear to me is that I can listen to myself without immediately turning what I hear into another assignment. That is something I want you to take from this article and continue exploring as you read my work: you can notice a thought without following it, feel an emotion without immediately acting on it, and have energy without spending every bit of it.

As you return to these teachings, pay attention to where they show up in your own life. Maybe you catch yourself replaying a conversation and choose to bring your attention back. Maybe you recognize that someone’s disappointment doesn’t require you to abandon your decision. Maybe you feel good and allow yourself to enjoy it without finding something else to accomplish. Those everyday moments give you somewhere to practice what you’re learning. Over time, you can become more familiar with your own needs—and more deliberate about how you respond to them.

That is what I want to support through Unleash Your Power. My Guidance articles offer teachings and reflections you can bring into your daily life. The Personal Energy Cleansing: The UYP Method gives you a complete written practice to follow independently. And my private energy-cleansing sessions give us dedicated time to work together directly.

However you choose to engage with my work, I want it to help you hear yourself more clearly and take what you hear seriously. You deserve to recognize your needs before you’re exhausted, honor a boundary before you’ve explained it ten different ways, and enjoy your own energy while it is still yours to enjoy.
